How to plant annual flowers

To create a beautiful composition from annual flowers, choose a well-lit location. First, you need to prepare the soil. Annual flowers prefer well-fertilized, drained neutral soil.

Gomphrenas are planted in the spring to obtain seedlings. Before planting, the seeds are soaked for 1-2 days for better sprouting. In 2-2.5 weeks the seeds should sprout. The seedlings may be planted out in the open soil when there is no possibility of light frosts.. Taking into account the fact that a bush of gomphrena will grow thick, you should add the seedlings of Lobelia at the distance of 12 inches (30сm). Gomphrena and Lobelia bloom for long periods of time. To get fluffy bushes of gomphrena, young twigs are grafted.

Care for annual flowers involves soil tillage, the removal of weeds, and regular watering.

Lobelia also loves fertile light soil. The bush’s height doesn’t exceed 6 8 inches (15 -20сm).

Annual Lobelias have small seeds. It’s not easy to maintain moisture in the open soil all of the time. In addition, any gardener wants to decorate his or her garden with blooming flowers as soon as possible, which is why the Lobelia seeds are often planted in pots or containers at the end of winter. The soil is carefully moistened, but not flooded. The pot is covered with glass or transparent film. Many annual flowers with tiny seeds are planted the same way as Lobelias.Lobelia

The sprouts of annual flowers appear in 2-3 weeks, with a temperature of 68 - 75.2F (20-24ºС). When the seedlings grow to 1 inch (3сm), they may be planted out into the lawn’s soil, on the condition that there are no more light frosts. Usually, the seedlings need to be conditioned to the cold before being planted out into the open soil. That’s why it’s good to create cooler conditions periodically and expose the little bushes, which have sprouted, to the open sun. This will improve their acclimation rate when you plant Lobelia out into the lawn’s soil.

The distance between the plants may be 8-10 cm, depending on what kind of a flower-bed you want to arrange. If you want to plant a mix of annual flowers, it’s better to plant Gomphrena as a background for land-covering Lobelias.

Lobelia blooms well in the sun. It tolerates a semi-shadow but doesn’t blossom so well. It’s poorly subjected to diseases. It may be used as a soil-covering plant, which blooms abundantly to decorate the curb. Blue Lobelia blooms all summer long.
